Almeria, Spain, Saudi Arabia and GCC Capital

In recent private equity developments, Cristiano Ronaldo has acquired a 25% stake in football club UD Almeria through CR7 Sports Investments, joining the ownership consortium led by the Saudi investment fund SMC Group.

While the headlines focus on the sporting dimension, the transaction is also relevant from a capital markets perspective. It reinforces:

Almería is my hometown and I have spent 2 months actively following Saudi and GCC investment trends. This represents more than a football story: it is another example of capital bridges forming between Spain and the Gulf.

Over the past years, Gulf-backed investment vehicles, some with dedicated mandates reaching €200M+ to Spain, have shown increasing interest in Iberian opportunities across sectors, very strong in energy.

How I see it: the challenge is often not capital availability, but cross-border alignment. This is a topic I would love to explore with ambitious European companies considering this bridge, and with anyone in private equity who wants to connect.
